逃得开的是种族歧视,逃不开的是命运。

Author Joel Berman's book, Destiny Obscure, is replete with historical overtones as he tells the tale of two young lovers trying to flee the bonds of racial hatred to find a new life in a more accepting land. The author's dramatic Civil War-era tale entrances us with riveting references to slavery, women's rights, Civil War medicine, the Transcontinental Railroad, kidnappings, and the opium trade. You will be spellbound as you encounter a variety of captors who forcefully separate a young black woman from the man she loves. And you will be engrossed as you follow Michael's desperate attempts to free his beloved Manda, his common-law wife. One of the author's gripping themes is a statement about motivations for actions. This dynamic story illustrates that motivations of the Civil War generation were much the same as ours are today, 150 years later.

Joel Berman writes a thrilling saga set against the backdrop of historical events: the atrocities of the Civil War, medicine in the mid-19th century, emancipation, the suffrage movement, the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, the conversion from sailing ships to steam ships, and the influx of the opium trade into the United States. Berman is a writer and surgeon who has written over 20 books. He is currently writing historical fiction and lives in California.
